Flying Lead Changes Explained

Flying lead changes can be tricky. Before you can learn how to do them, you should first understand the mechanics. Equestrian Neighton created this video with the description below it to help anyone who wants to better understand flying lead changes.

“You must start with a balanced and straight horse. From there, the rider uses his or her aids to help the horse change leads in a moment of suspension. Specifically, a rider has more contact on the outside rein while the rider’s inside leg is at the girth and outside leg is slightly behind the girth. The rider’s outside shoulder is slightly moved back and weight is on the outside buttock. At the moment of suspension, the rider simultaneously inverts the aids so that the horse can switch leads.”
