As horseman and woman, it is nearly impossible to avoid mosquitoes. But we can take steps to reduce the risk. Try to avoid peak hours where mosquitos are around – from dusk till dawn. Wear long sleeves and pants or consider rescheduling your riding and barn work to mornings or early afternoons. Reduce water unneeded free standing or open water sources that attract mosquitoes and become breeding grounds.

For those of you wondering, symptoms and signs of West Nile virus include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Severe symptoms and signs may include stiff neck, sleepiness, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, and paralysis. Most cases of West Nile virus infection are mild and go unreported.
