UPDATE: Rita Crundwell Free on Bail Alleged $30Million Theft
Rita Crundwell is free on a $4,500 recognizance bond. A pretrial report determined that she is not a flight risk or a danger to the community. Some of the conditions of her bond are, she cannot travel outside northern Illinois and western Wisconsin (the areas where her two horse farms are). She is also not able to sell any of her horses or other property and she is banned from accessing two bank accounts. She cannot obtain a passport.
This really comes as a shock. Rita Crundwell was a well respected breeder and had 52 AQHA world championships to her credit. When Ms. Crundwell was on an extended vacation last fall, a city worker assigned to fill in raised questions about the city’s bank statements.
Below are some of the things she is accused of using the money for:
$2.5 million on her personal American Express card – including $339,000 on jewelry .
$450,000 in stolen funds for operations at her Meri-J Ranch, where 150 horses are kept.
$2.1 million Motor Home
Several horse trailers, cars and other luxury items.
