Loving AQHA’s Rookie Level Classes – Open, Youth and Amateur
I was at a show this weekend and heard “Open Rookie Hunter Under Saddle” announced. I was shocked! I knew AQHA had added new Rookie classes, but didn’t know they applied to Open riders as well. I think this is a great thing for AQHA. There are so many people that are “Professionals” through providing Riding Lessons or maybe even competing in an unrelated event on a different circuit. This gives them the opportunity and introduction into AQHA showing, without having to compete against the top trainers! It is also good for youth riders and amateurs for the same reason. I think all around AQHA made a good choice with adding this new program, and having the classes offered at major shows!
Eligibility for a Rookie-level class depends on both the horse and the rider’s show records:
- For a horse to be eligible to compete in a Rookie-level class, that horse must have earned fewer than 10 lifetime points in that class in any division.
- For an exhibitor to be eligible to compete in a Rookie-level class, that exhibitor must have earned fewer than 10 lifetime points in that class in any division.
- Thus, to compete in a Rookie level class, the horse and rider must each have earned fewer than 10 points in that particular class.
